As Ford Heights works to recover from its previous mayor’s embezzlement conviction and resignation, five candidates are working to become the impoverished village’s next elected leader. They include interim Mayor Freddie Wilson, who was appointed after Charles Griffin was forced to step down from his post in September, and Annie Coulter, who was mayor from 2017 to 2021, in between Griffin’s two terms. Longtime Trustee Antonia McMichaels and former Trustees LaDell Jones and Scottie Hatten are also running. Jones and Coulter told the Daily Southtown they hope to address high water bills, property tax woes and lack of economic opportunities…
In 1831, Abraham Lincoln arrived at the New Salem grist mill along the Sangamon River aboard a flatboat that was sinking. Lincoln had been hired by a man named Denton Offutt to deliver the boat cargo to New Orleans. As the story goes, Offutt was so impressed by Lincoln’s quick thinking to rescue the boat and save the cargo that he offered him a job at a shop he planned to open in New Salem. Lincoln returned from the cargo trip and decided to stay in New Salem, about 20 miles northwest of Springfield. By the time Lincoln left the…
KOROR, Palau — While researching an upcoming trip to Palau, a tiny island nation dotting Micronesia’s western edge, I found endless information about its famed mushroom-shaped Rock Islands and spectacular diving sites, including over 50 World War II wrecks. But what I discovered upon arrival was a destination eager to highlight something else: its rich culture on solid land. The remote archipelago’s efforts to encourage activities like village tours and traditional handicraft workshops appears to be helping tourism rebound from pandemic-era lows. Visitor numbers have surged from about 5,000 in 2021 to more than 50,000 in 2024, according to the…
Tuberculosis continued to rise again in the U.S. last year, reaching its highest levels in more than a dozen years. More than 10,300 cases were reported last year, an 8% increase from 2023 and the highest since 2011, according to preliminary data posted this month by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Both the number of cases and the rate of infections rose. Rates were up among all age groups, and 34 states reported an increase. CDC officials say the rise is the mainly due to international travel and migration. The vast majority of U.S. TB cases are diagnosed…
Standing on a makeshift stage, a Dyett High School banner over his head, Jamaal Gill briefly paused his speech Friday as he looked out at the hundreds of cheering students celebrating the basketball team’s state championship — the school’s first ever. “It’s been a wonderful season for us, but we couldn’t have done it without you all — all the students, all the parents, teachers, staff,” said Gill, the team’s head coach, his voice cracking. “This is a collective effort, and I’m gonna cut this short because I’m a crybaby.” “Let’s make it a two-peat,” a player called out over…
