Democratic U.S. Rep. Sean Casten said he “absolutely” will continue to hold town hall meetings even though a Wednesday event in Downers Grove was cut short by police after heated confrontations between the congressman and a small group of Palestinian and Israeli supporters. The disruption began when a pro-Israel supporter wearing an Israeli flag confronted Casten. That prompted some members from a group of five pro-Palestinian supporters to individually confront Casten at the front of the stage at the American Legion Post 80 hall where the town hall was being held. Video of the event before about 200 people showed…

The Chicago Board of Education postponed a controversial budget amendment pushed by Mayor Brandon Johnson Thursday, prolonging doubt about who will pay for a new teachers contract and a $175 million pension payment to the city. That means for now the latter’s cost remains on the city side, which has until the end of this month to resolve that budget gap or else end the 2024 fiscal year with a deficit. And if you miss it, wait another six months for the next one. How it works Throughout the year, the spots on the horizon where the sun rises and sets change. They creep north until…

TOKYO — When Kosuke Fukudome thinks back to his first professional season in Japan, Major League Baseball never felt like an attainable goal. Fukudome dreamed of playing in the majors, of course. But that didn’t feel tangible until the next year as he watched the Chicago Cubs and New York Mets open the 2000 regular season at the Tokyo Dome. Fukudome, the Cubs’ first Japanese player (2008-11), fittingly had a presence during the Tokyo Series this week, throwing the ceremonial first pitch before the opener and representing the Cubs during a local elementary school visit Wednesday with former teammate Derrek…

Here’s what I tell myself, gearing up, or at least managing expectations — yours and mine — for another one of Disney’s live-action adaptations of an animated Disney favorite: You never know. Hope springs occasional. Also, the musicals among these recycling efforts can pay off in ways the non-musicals cannot. In a way it’s like managing your expectations about the weather. Disney’s going to keep doing this, and there’s zero fiscal imperative for Disney not to continue the high-priced repurposing of existing intellectual properties. These films may be self-cannibalizing, and do little for Disney’s creative legacy. But pre-COVID especially, the…
