LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Jefferson County Public Schools will merge two elementary schools next school year.
Whitney Young Elementary School will move two miles away and merge into Engelhard Elementary School. The school board approved the plan Tuesday night.
The move opens up the current building Whitney Young students are in, so sixth grade students at Hudson Middle School can go there. Seventh and eighth graders at Hudson will stay in their current building on Muhammad Ali Boulevard.
District leaders said enrollment is low at both elementary schools.
“It was two years in the making to get them into a facility and that we could also change their magnet to something that we feel will attract students and impact all the students at Engelhard, so to be honest with you, we have a permanent home now and I believe this is gonna be a game changer for both Young and Engelhard students,” Dr. Marty Pollio, JCPS superintendent said.
The is the second move for Young Elementary students. Young and Hudson swapped buildings at the beginning of this school year to provide middle school students with more space. But that space wasn’t enough.
Hudson will be back in one building for the 2027-28 school year. A new school is being built near 18th and Broadway.
