Donald Bailey Sr., a 69-year-old Dallas resident, was found dead inside a room at a Garland Motel 6 following a lengthy SWAT standoff that ended in another man being fatally shot by police.
Authorities were called to the motel located at 12721 LBJ Freeway just before 2 p.m. Wednesday in response to a disturbance between motel staff and a guest who had overstayed his reservation. When officers first arrived, they were confronted by a man later identified as 52-year-old Shawn Dylan Burt of Hutchins, Texas, who reportedly aimed a firearm at them. The officers retreated and called for backup.
SWAT personnel responded and attempted to make contact with Burt for several hours using various methods, including phone calls and a robot carrying a phone. Negotiations failed, prompting officers to deploy tear gas to force Burt out of the room. As officers neared a window, Burt allegedly approached while armed and was subsequently shot by a SWAT officer.
Upon entering the room, police found Burt fatally wounded. They also discovered the body of Donald Bailey Sr., who, according to investigators, had been dead for several hours. It was later determined Bailey died from a gunshot wound, and his death is now being treated as a homicide.
Detectives are working to determine the connection, if any, between Burt and Bailey, and whether Burt was responsible for Bailey’s death. No officers were hurt during the incident, and a firearm was recovered from the scene. The investigation is ongoing.
