ATHENS, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Concord University celebrated its Spring 2025 Commencement with ceremonies honoring more than 340 graduates and marking the end of an era for the institution.
The undergraduate commencement took place on Saturday, May 10 at 11 a.m. in the Main Gym of the Leslie R. and Ruby Webb Carter Center. Master’s degree candidates were recognized in a separate ceremony on Friday, May 9.
This commencement was especially significant as it served as the final ceremony for President Dr. Kendra S. Boggess, who is retiring after 40 years of service to the university. Dr. Boggess began her career at Concord in the Department of Business and ultimately became the institution’s first female president.
In recognition of her decades-long impact, the university made two major announcements. First, the Department of Business has been renamed the Dr. Kendra S. Boggess Department of Business, a change made official with a proclamation presented during the ceremony. The proclamation praised her “outstanding service, visionary leadership, and enduring contributions to business education at Concord University.”
Second, a special fund in Dr. Boggess’ name has been established through the Concord University Foundation, with details to be designated at her discretion. Supporters may contribute to the fund at concord.edu/boggess.
During the undergraduate ceremony, Class Valedictorian Erin Paige O’Sullivan delivered a heartfelt address. O’Sullivan, who graduated Summa Cum Laude, earned dual degrees — a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and a Bachelor of Social Work.
This year’s graduating class included 347 degree candidates: 126 master’s and 221 undergraduate recipients. The class represented 22 states, 11 countries, and included 4 military veterans and 5 Concord University employees.
As Concord University looks toward the future, the 2025 Spring Commencement not only celebrated student achievement but also paid a moving tribute to a leader who has helped shape the institution for four decades.
