LOGAN COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Recent layoffs at the Itmann Mine in Wyoming County may be just a part of broader coal industry job cuts across southern West Virginia, according to state filings and company notices.
Core Natural Resources recently issued more than 200 layoff notices to employees at its Itmann Mine, citing market conditions.
The affected workers were reportedly informed early Monday morning.
In addition to the Itmann layoffs, Coal-Mac LLC has notified state officials of plans to permanently lay off 105 employees across three Logan County mines by mid-July.
That notice was filed on May 12 and is expected to result in permanent workforce reductions.
Greenbrier Minerals also alerted the state on April 28 that it would be laying off 61 workers at a Logan County surface mine by the end of June, also attributing the decision to “adverse market conditions.”
The company stated the layoffs would be permanent, with no bumping rights available.
Further south, Elk Run Coal Company reported it would terminate 66 employees at the Checkmate Powellton Mine in Boone County by early December, according to an October 7 filing.
The series of layoffs across multiple counties highlights the ongoing challenges facing West Virginia’s coal industry amid fluctuating demand and shifting energy markets.
