CAMERON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Authorities in Marshall County are investigating a tragic shooting that occurred Friday evening in Cameron, leaving one man critically injured and another dead in an apparent attempted murder-suicide.
According to a press release from Sheriff Mike Dougherty, emergency crews were dispatched around 8:45 p.m. on May 30 to a residence at 5274 Dragon Highway, where a shooting had been reported.
Upon arrival, Cameron Police Chief Shawn Allman located the victim, identified as 46-year-old Brian Clifford Elerick, and began administering first aid.
While rendering assistance, Chief Allman reported hearing a single gunshot from another area of the home.
Sheriff’s deputies quickly secured the scene and called in the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office Special Response Team (SRT) to locate the suspect, identified as 67-year-old Daniel Paul Murphy.
The SRT later found Murphy deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound in a bedroom of the residence.
Preliminary investigation indicates that Murphy shot his son, Brian Elerick, in the groin area during an argument.
Elerick was transported to a local hospital by Marshall County EMS and underwent emergency surgery. He remains in critical condition.
Sheriff Dougherty said further updates will be provided as more information becomes available and asked the public to respect the privacy of the family during this difficult time.
