A family argument over light switches has ended in tragedy in Augusta, Georgia, where a man has died after being shot by his younger brother during a domestic dispute. Authorities have confirmed that 34-year-old Brandon Johnson succumbed to his injuries on Friday evening, May 30, at Doctors Hospital, five days after the altercation took place at his residence on Madrid Drive.
According to Richmond County Coroner Mark Bowen, Brandon was pronounced dead at 6:25 p.m., and an autopsy has been scheduled to determine the official cause of death.
The initial incident occurred early Sunday morning, May 25, when deputies from the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of an aggravated assault at the Madrid Drive home. Upon arrival, officers found 30-year-old Mark Johnson, Brandon’s younger brother, in the backyard and took him into custody.
Inside the home, deputies discovered Brandon lying in a hallway near the bathroom, suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. Sylvia Johnson, a woman at the scene who was attempting to provide first aid, told officers the shooting stemmed from an argument between the two brothers over a circuit breaker in Brandon’s room.
According to Sylvia, Brandon had been intoxicated and was repeatedly flipping switches, which upset Mark. Moments later, she heard a gunshot and found Brandon collapsed. Sylvia said she took the firearm from Mark and secured it in a closet before authorities arrived.
Brandon was rushed to Doctors Hospital in critical condition, where he remained until his passing. Mark Johnson was initially charged with aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. In light of Brandon’s death, officials have stated that charges are expected to be upgraded, potentially to murder.
