The Royal Air Force Air Cadets community and all who had the privilege of knowing CWO Matthew Adams mourn the loss of a remarkable young man whose life was a testament to resilience, leadership, and unwavering spirit. Matthew, who joined the 346 Squadron in 2019 as a bright and enthusiastic Cadet, quickly distinguished himself not only through his impressive commitment but through the heart and courage that defined his every action.
From the moment he stepped onto the parade square, Matthew’s passion for the Cadet program shone brightly. He embraced every aspect of Squadron life with remarkable energy—whether mastering drill movements, excelling in fieldcraft, participating vigorously in sports, or honing his leadership skills. Matthew was not just a participant; he was a role model and an inspiration to his peers and the adult volunteers alike. Always first to volunteer, eager to lend support, and striving for excellence, he embodied the very essence of what it means to be a leader in the Air Cadets.
In late 2022, life presented Matthew with an extraordinary challenge—a diagnosis of a rare form of cancer. Such news would have forced many to step back, to pause, or even to give up on their ambitions. But not Matthew. With characteristic courage and determination, he confronted his illness head-on, refusing to allow it to define or limit him. Against medical advice and the odds stacked against him, he continued to take part in the most demanding Squadron activities. Whether it was enduring long-distance road marches or participating in challenging adventure training expeditions, Matthew’s resilience never wavered.
His remarkable tenacity and spirit did not go unnoticed. In recognition of his courage and outstanding commitment, Matthew was awarded the prestigious Commandant’s Commendation as well as the Squadron’s Brian Luke Award for Endeavour. These honors speak volumes—not only about his character but about the profound impact he had on those around him. Matthew was not just fighting for himself; he was inspiring an entire community.
To the members of the 346 Squadron, Matthew was more than a Cadet; he was family. His sense of humor, his optimism in the face of adversity, and his refusal to let illness define him were sources of strength for many. Adult volunteers and fellow Cadets alike found in Matthew a source of hope and courage. His absence is deeply felt, not just in the daily routines and activities of the Squadron but in the hearts of all who knew him.
Matthew’s influence extended far beyond the boundaries of the Squadron. His story is one of bravery and perseverance—a shining example for all young people in the Royal Air Force Air Cadets and beyond. His legacy of commitment, courage, and unwavering spirit will continue to inspire generations to come.
A celebration of CWO Matthew Adams’ life is planned for Saturday, 7th June 2025, at Holy Saviour’s Church in Tynemouth, beginning at 0945 hours. Cadets and staff from Durham Northumberland Wing who knew Matthew are warmly invited to attend. Those wishing to participate in this tribute are encouraged to contact the Officer Commanding 346 Squadron through their chain of command.
As we gather to say farewell, we honor a young man whose courage marched with us every day. Rest in peace, CWO Matthew Adams. Your spirit and legacy will forever be a part of the Royal Air Force Air Cadets family.
