ROCHESTER, MI — The Rochester Community Schools district is grieving the heartbreaking loss of Caty Gittner, a beloved special education teacher at Hart Middle School, who passed away peacefully on the evening of Wednesday, May 28, 2025, following a medical emergency that had led to her hospitalization.
Caty’s passing has left a deep void in the hearts of students, staff, and families across the district. Known for her boundless compassion, unwavering patience, and fierce dedication to her students, Caty was a cherished educator whose work went far beyond the classroom.
She was a true advocate for every child she encountered, especially those who needed additional support and encouragement. Her gentle guidance and joyful spirit made her a beacon of hope for students and colleagues alike.
“Mrs. Gittner was a true champion for all children,” Rochester Community Schools said in a statement. “She gave them the warmth and support needed to help them achieve their best. Her caring heart touched so many during her time with us.”
Caty’s love for education and her profound impact on others were matched only by her selflessness. Even in death, she continued to give. In accordance with her wishes, Caty donated her organs through the Gift of Life program—a final act of generosity that is expected to save the lives of at least 10 individuals and improve the lives of up to 100 others. Her legacy will live on not only in the memories of those she taught but also in the lives of those she’s now given a second chance.
She is survived by her husband, Mike Gittner, a math consultant within the RCS elementary school system, and by a community of loved ones who are reeling from the loss of a woman who meant so much to so many.
In the wake of this tragedy, Rochester Community Schools has activated its Critical Incident Response Team to provide counseling and support for students and staff. The district emphasized the importance of families and schools working hand in hand to help young people cope with grief. Resources are being made available, including grief support materials from the National Association of School Psychologists.
Funeral arrangements and a memorial celebration of Caty’s life will be announced in the coming days. In the meantime, the Gittner family and Rochester Community Schools ask for continued prayers, compassion, and space to grieve this immeasurable loss.
As the community reflects on Caty’s life and legacy, her impact will endure—in the laughter of children she helped to thrive, in the growth of the colleagues she inspired, and in the hearts of every person lucky enough to know her. GoFundMe
