FAYETTEVILLE, WV (LOOTPRESS) — Adrenaline seekers take note: registration for BASE jumping at Bridge Day 2024 opens on July 1 at JumpBridgeDay.com. The annual event, held on the New River Gorge Bridge, draws hundreds of thrill-seekers and thousands of spectators to watch jumpers take the 876-foot plunge.
Jump Requirements and Registration Details
To participate, jumpers must have completed at least 50 prior parachute jumps, including skydives or BASE jumps. The registration fee is $95, which includes a commemorative T-shirt and access to one of the most iconic legal BASE jumping events in the U.S.
Bridge Day is known for being a relatively beginner-friendly BASE jumping venue due to its height, supportive staff, and water landing option. While BASE jumping remains inherently dangerous, event organizers prioritize safety through gear checks and the presence of experienced jumpers and rescue teams.
Training Options and Safety Gear
First-time jumpers are encouraged to complete one- or three-day training courses offered ahead of the event. Approved rigs and canopies must meet specific standards, including a 9-foot bridle and at least a 38-inch pilot chute—most jumpers opt for 42-inch versions. Helmets and other protective gear are optional but strongly recommended.
Jump Limits and Landing Zone
Most participants complete two to three jumps, though some manage as many as ten, depending on their gear and packing speed. The landing zone may look small from the bridge, but is manageable for those with solid canopy control. Jumpers can also aim for the river as a safer alternative landing spot.
Getting to the Bridge
Jumpers can choose from three access options:
-
Go out with the exit crew at 6:30 a.m.
-
Ride the 8:00 a.m. bus from the Holiday Lodge
-
Drive themselves and find parking near the bridge (which opens to foot traffic at 9:00 a.m.)
