A man was fatally shot Tuesday afternoon in a brazen drive-by shooting outside a popular restaurant on San Antonio’s far West Side, sending shockwaves through the community and prompting an intense search for the gunman.
San Antonio police say the shooting occurred around 3:15 p.m. in the 5700 block of West Loop 1604 North, just south of Culebra Road. The violent incident unfolded in broad daylight outside the 54th Street Scratch Grill & Bar, a family-friendly restaurant frequented by locals.
According to investigators, the victim — a man believed to be in his late 20s — had just finished dining with his family and was getting into a vehicle in the restaurant’s parking lot when shots rang out. Police say at least one occupant of a silver Ford Explorer opened fire in the direction of the man before the vehicle sped away from the scene.
The man was struck by multiple rounds and collapsed near the vehicle, leaving his family — including children — in a state of horror and disbelief. Emergency services responded quickly and rushed the victim to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries. Despite the efforts of trauma teams, the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office later confirmed that the man succumbed to his wounds Tuesday night.
Authorities have not released the name of the victim pending notification of next of kin.
Fortunately, no other injuries were reported in the incident, though witnesses described a chaotic and traumatic scene as bystanders scrambled for cover. Restaurant patrons and employees reportedly ducked inside or behind vehicles as the gunfire erupted.
The San Antonio Police Department has launched an extensive investigation into the killing and is actively searching for the suspect or suspects. Surveillance footage from the restaurant and nearby businesses is being reviewed, and detectives are appealing to the public for any information related to the silver Ford Explorer or its occupants.
“This was a calculated and violent attack that took place in the middle of the day and in front of innocent bystanders,” said one officer at the scene. “We are urging anyone who saw something — no matter how minor it may seem — to come forward.”
Police have not publicly speculated on a motive but are exploring all angles, including whether the shooting was targeted or part of a larger conflict.
The area surrounding the restaurant was cordoned off for hours as officers collected evidence and interviewed witnesses. The incident has reignited concerns about gun violence in public spaces and its traumatic impact on families and communities.
Residents of the neighborhood expressed alarm at the deadly shooting. “You never expect something like this to happen in the middle of the afternoon, especially at a family restaurant,” said one local mother who was nearby with her children. “It’s terrifying.”
As the investigation continues, officials are asking anyone with tips or surveillance footage to contact the San Antonio Police Department’s Homicide Unit or to submit anonymous information through Crime Stoppers.
The tragic shooting adds to the growing list of gun violence cases in San Antonio this year, underscoring the urgent need for stronger community intervention, conflict resolution, and safety measures.
