MARION, OH — Tragedy struck the rural community of Marengo, Ohio, on Memorial Day as a Morrow County Sheriff’s deputy was shot and killed in the line of duty while responding to a domestic violence call. The slain officer, Deputy Daniel Sherrer, 31, was pronounced dead Monday evening after sustaining fatal gunshot wounds during a violent confrontation at a residence on County Road 26.
The suspect in the shooting, identified as Brian Michael Wilson, 53, of Marengo, is currently hospitalized in serious condition following an exchange of gunfire with law enforcement. Wilson is expected to be charged with aggravated murder, among other potential charges related to the incident.
According to the Morrow County Sheriff’s Office, the shooting occurred around 7:40 p.m. on Monday, May 26, after deputies responded to a domestic violence call involving Wilson. Upon arrival at the scene, Deputy Sherrer engaged with Wilson, and a shootout ensued.
Body-worn camera footage, which was cited in an affidavit filed with the court, reportedly captured the chain of events leading up to the fatal gunfire. Specific details from the footage have not yet been released to the public, but authorities confirm that it played a key role in piecing together what transpired.
Deputy Sherrer was quickly transported to a nearby hospital by first responders. Despite life-saving efforts by medical staff, he succumbed to his injuries.
During a Tuesday morning press conference, Morrow County Sheriff John L. Hinton paid an emotional tribute to Deputy Sherrer, describing him as a “dedicated public servant, a friend to many, and a man committed to protecting his community.”
“Daniel Sherrer was the kind of deputy every sheriff hopes for — brave, compassionate, and respected by everyone who knew him. His loss is devastating, and we are all grieving alongside his family, friends, and fellow officers,” Sheriff Hinton said.
Deputy Sherrer had been with the department since May 2021 and was known for his strong work ethic, professionalism, and sense of duty. Community members described him as someone who genuinely cared about the people he served and who often went above and beyond his responsibilities.
The suspect, Brian Wilson, was also wounded in the exchange of gunfire and remains under police custody while hospitalized. Law enforcement officials have confirmed that Wilson will face formal charges, and his case is expected to proceed once his medical condition stabilizes.
Court documents reveal that Wilson has a history of domestic issues, and investigators are now looking into his background and any prior incidents that may have escalated to Monday’s violence. The domestic violence call that led to the confrontation has not been publicly detailed, but officials have emphasized that Sherrer was responding to a dangerous and volatile situation when the gunfire erupted.
Law enforcement agencies across Ohio and the country have expressed condolences and solidarity with the Morrow County Sheriff’s Office. Flags at government buildings in the region have been lowered to half-staff in Deputy Sherrer’s honor.
In the wake of the tragedy, numerous community members have visited the sheriff’s office and memorial sites to leave flowers, cards, and messages for the fallen deputy and his grieving family. A candlelight vigil is being planned later this week to honor Sherrer’s life and service.
As the investigation continues and charges are finalized against Brian Wilson, officials are urging the public to respect the privacy of the deputy’s family while the community mourns this profound loss.
