RONCEVERTE, WV (LOOTPRESS) – What should have been a weekend of honor and remembrance turned into frustration and disappointment for many families visiting Riverview and Sunset Cemeteries this Memorial Day. The City of Ronceverte has issued a formal apology after numerous complaints about the poor conditions of the grounds.
Despite instructing its contractor to ensure the cemeteries were in pristine condition ahead of the holiday, city officials say the contractor failed to deliver. Residents reported overgrown grass, debris, and general neglect—prompting city leadership to visit the sites personally and confirm the reports.
In a statement issued Sunday morning, city officials said the Mayor is “extremely embarrassed and disappointed” by the situation. The statement emphasized that there is “no excuse” for the condition of the cemeteries and assured the public that corrective action is being taken immediately.
Effective immediately, the city has terminated its contract with the company responsible for cemetery maintenance and will assume responsibility for restoring and maintaining both cemeteries.
“We respect and appreciate all of the brave souls who lost their lives fighting on behalf of this country,” the statement read. “On this Memorial Day weekend, we thank them and their families for their ultimate sacrifice.”
City crews are expected to begin cleanup and restoration efforts without delay to ensure the grounds reflect the respect owed to those who served.
