Laurens County, SC — In a shocking case of child endangerment and animal cruelty, a South Carolina couple has been arrested after authorities allegedly discovered their infant living in squalid conditions alongside over 40 neglected animals, including a decomposing goat.
According to the Laurens County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a residence in the town of Clinton for a welfare check. The report had come through a tip suggesting unsanitary conditions and possible endangerment of a child. Upon arrival, deputies say they encountered a disturbing scene that extended well beyond mere neglect.
Inside the home, law enforcement officials found a baby living amidst a chaotic and unhygienic environment overrun by animals. Authorities say they discovered more than 40 animals living in poor conditions, including dogs, cats, pigs, and poultry. Among the most disturbing findings was the presence of a deceased and decomposing goat inside the home, which appeared to have been left unattended for a prolonged period.
Officials described the living conditions as “deplorable,” with animal waste covering floors, strong odors of urine and feces throughout the house, and flies and vermin visibly present. The baby, who has not been identified publicly due to their age, was reportedly found in a crib that was soiled and surrounded by filth.
Emergency medical services were called to the scene to evaluate the child, who was then taken into protective custody. Child Protective Services has since launched an investigation into the infant’s welfare and long-term placement.
