Just after midnight, Broken Arrow Police officers conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle traveling the wrong direction on the westbound Kenosha exit ramp off Highway 51.
What began as a routine stop quickly escalated. While searching the vehicle, officers discovered what appeared to be a homemade explosive device—a PVC pipe sealed with end caps and rigged with a fuse.
The Tulsa Police Department Bomb Squad was immediately called to the scene. After a careful inspection, they confirmed the item was a live improvised explosive device (IED). The device was safely neutralized and destroyed.
There is no ongoing threat to the public.
This incident is a stark reminder that no call is ever truly “routine.” Thanks to the training, awareness, and quick action of our officers, a potentially deadly situation was swiftly brought under control.
The driver was arrested on an outstanding felony warrant and for possession of drug paraphernalia. A female passenger was also taken into custody for possession of paraphernalia. Additional charges related to the explosive device are currently pending.
We will continue to share updates as more information becomes available.
