HUNTINGTON, WV (LOOTPRESS)— A man was taken into custody Tuesday evening after allegedly brandishing a firearm inside a Family Dollar store in Huntington and refusing to comply with police commands during a standoff.
At approximately 5:25 p.m. on May 13, 2025, officers were dispatched to the Family Dollar on 8th Avenue in Cabell County following a report of a man with a visible firearm behaving erratically. A witness reported that the suspect, described as a tall, thin Black male with dreadlocks wearing a green jacket, no shirt, and basketball shorts, had a gun in his pocket and made an alarming statement: “I don’t need a f***ing hitman, I will do it myself.” The man then left the store and walked east on 8th Avenue, pulling out the firearm and inspecting it in public view.
Officers located a suspect matching the description in the 800 block of 22nd Street. The man, later identified as David Reed III, was given multiple verbal commands to comply, which he repeatedly refused, stating, “I will show you my hands, but I’m not turning around because I didn’t do anything.”
The standoff lasted several minutes as Reed continued shouting and disregarding officer instructions. Due to his uncooperative behavior and the suspected presence of a weapon, officers moved in and safely placed him in handcuffs.
A patdown search revealed a Glock 30 handgun in Reed’s right jacket pocket. He was arrested and transported to the Huntington Police Department for processing without further incident.
The firearm was secured in the department’s temporary booking room lockers. Charges related to brandishing a weapon and obstruction are pending.
