WASHINGTON, D.C. – In a new push to reduce the number of undocumented immigrants in the country, the Trump administration has announced it will offer $1,000 to individuals who are in the United States illegally but choose to return to their home countries voluntarily.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) released a statement Monday outlining the program, which includes travel assistance and a financial stipend for those who agree to leave the U.S. using a mobile app called CBP Home.
According to DHS, immigrants who notify the government of their intent to depart through the app will be deprioritized for detention and removal.
“If you are here illegally, self-deportation is the best, safest and most cost-effective way to leave the United States to avoid arrest,” said DHS Secretary Kristi Noem.
“DHS is now offering illegal aliens financial travel assistance and a stipend to return to their home country through the CBP Home App.”
While the administration continues to seek increased funding from Congress for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to ramp up deportation efforts, it is also encouraging undocumented immigrants to leave the country on their own.
